May 22nd, 2011 - Guitar Clinic recap with host Dr. Steve Briody
Guitarists of many ages, levels, and styles gathered at Five Towns College in Dix Hills last Sunday afternoon for a clinic given by guitarist Steve Briody. Dr. Briody, a guitar instructor at Five Towns College, has had a successful solo CD, a column in Guitar Player magazine (his latest in the June 2011 issue), is the author of the publication “Jazz Guitar Lines of the Greats”, and has worked with jazz giants such as Jeff Lorber, Randy Brecker, Dave Valentin and Carl Fischer. Steve also creates guitar video lesson clips for the popular website learnintwo.com.
Known mostly as a jazz and funk guitarist, Briody discussed his development as a musician and the importance of trying to figure out his favorite rock songs and imitating his idols as a young player. The 1 ½ hour session featured many questions and lively discussion from an enthusiastic audience passionate about rock, blues, and jazz guitar. Briody, who brought his Fender Stratocaster, made sure to speak to each guitarist, giving them advice, and demonstrating important techniques used by legends such as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Santana, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Maroon 5. Briody remarked, “What I found quite interesting was, despite the different styles and ages of the audience, they had very similar questions….wanting to learn more lead guitar concepts, how to develop their ear, gain better chord knowledge, and how to practice most effectively. It’s nice to know that they learned a lot, and we had some laughs too….I look forward to the next time”.
